“When you were absent from your pew this morning, I was afraid your father had found us out and forbid you from seeing me at last, even at such a public place as the church. But your mother told me that you were sick—sent home on Thursday from St. Rosalie’s with a cough, she said, and another migraine. Oh, my poor love. Though I’m glad you’ve been set free from that horrid place for a little while.

“Forgive my selfishness, but I miss you. I want to come see you. I will find some excuse. I’ll deliver a ‘salve’ to soothe your lungs: just a dollop of my mother’s hyacinth lotion. Who will ever know? Our lives, after all, are so webbed with secrets that a white lie is a negligible sin, don’t you think?

“I can see your eyes narrowing now, my dear. I can hear, too, your sacrilegious thoughts. Rail against the church all you want, but it is the dearest place to me, because it is the one place, the one time during every dreary week, that I’m promised sight of your face. I would endure anything for that—for you.

“Until we meet again, think of that walk we took in the woods last Saturday, while your parents were occupied with the priest… I think of it often, my love. I think of it every hour. No—that’s another lie. I think of it every minute, many times every minute. I think of my…”
